Transformation Efforts
Transformation Efforts
As we imagine a future where young people, and all members of our communities, have access to safety and security, we must push for a true transformation of local and national definitions of and responses to crime, violence, harm, and suffering.
Transformative efforts will be those that fundamentally move every aspect of our crime, justice, and detention practices away from punishment and shame toward healing, growth, and reestablishing dignity and connections to the community; these efforts have been outlined and are being fought for by the organizing efforts outlined in the solidarity statements. The transformative efforts outlined below are those directly connected to people experiencing homelessness.
Efforts Needed for Transformation:
Law enforcement and private security agencies are removed from homeless services, education, and child welfare settings, creating space between harm and punishment for accountability and healing. Funding currently allocated to law enforcement to control and interact with people experiencing homelessness can be reallocated to community-based organizations focused on ensuring community safety, growth, and thriving.
Funding is provided to community-based programs to address the root causes of violence and crime, including but not limited to economic insecurity and poverty, food and nutrition, physical and behavioral health care, and housing for all, and ensuring nonviolent, compassionate services for those facing crises of any kind.
